How Connecticut handles it

  • No county government. Connecticut abolished county government effective October 1, 1960. Towns (169) hold the records that counties hold elsewhere: land records, vital records, trade names, assessments, tax collection, and voter registration.5
  • Town clerk = land records + vital records registrar + trade names. Town clerks are by law the registrars of vital statistics, unless special laws provide otherwise, and they also record land records and trade names.6

Official warnings

  • Paid "Grant Deed" copy mailers. Companies mailed homeowners offers to sell deed copies for about $80-$83. DCP says to ignore them: town clerks charge $1/page plus $2 for certification. (Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection)85

Official copies vs look-alike sites

A certified copy comes only from the office that holds the record; reports and "research copies" sold by commercial sites are not issued by any Connecticut office. How to tell an official record source from a paid look-alike.
