About County Records Guide

County Records Guide tells you which county or state office holds the record you need, what a copy costs and where the official search is. It is an independent reference, not a government site.

What this site does

Public records in the United States are spread across thousands of offices: county recorders and clerks, clerks of court, assessors and tax collectors, state vital records offices, probate courts and, in New England, town clerks. Their names change from state to state and their websites rarely say which other office holds what you are looking for. This site puts that map in one place.

For each state we cover, the guide names the office that keeps deeds, property and tax records, court files, marriage and divorce records, birth and death certificates and probate files, quotes the fee the law or the office sets, and links to the official search. County guides go further: the office for each record, its address, phone and hours, the online searches it runs or links to, and its own fee schedule.

What this site does not do

  • We are not a government agency and are not affiliated with any county, state or federal office.
  • We do not hold, sell or search records about people. There is no name search on this site and we never ask for personal information.
  • We do not send record requests for you and do not give legal advice.
  • We do not link to data brokers, people-search or background-check sites, and we carry no advertising.

Where the information comes from

Every office, fee, phone number and link comes from an official source: the office's own website, the statute or court rule that sets the fee, or an official state directory. A second researcher re-opens every source and checks each figure before a page is published, and every page lists its sources with the date they were checked. How we check explains the process in full.
