How Connecticut handles it

  • No county government. Connecticut abolished county government effective October 1, 1960. Towns (169) hold the records that counties hold elsewhere: land records, vital records, trade names, assessments, tax collection, and voter registration.6
  • Town clerk = land records + vital records registrar + trade names. Town clerks are by law the registrars of vital statistics, unless special laws provide otherwise, and they also record land records and trade names.2
  • Genealogical society access. Members of Connecticut-authorized genealogical societies may inspect and buy copies of vital records, including restricted births, at town registrars.2

  • Only VitalChek is approved for online vital records. Other online sellers of birth, death and marriage certificates are not approved by DPH (Department of Public Health)3

Official copies vs look-alike sites

A certified copy comes only from the office that holds the record; reports and "research copies" sold by commercial sites are not issued by any Connecticut office. How to tell an official record source from a paid look-alike.
