How Utah handles it

  • Marriage licenses and certificates held by county clerks are designated vital records with restricted access (direct, tangible, legitimate interest) until 75 years old — unlike many states where marriage records are open5
  • State vital records office holds marriage and divorce certificates only for 1978-2010; other years come from county clerks (marriage) and district courts (divorce)6

Official copies vs look-alike sites

A certified copy comes only from the office that holds the record; reports and "research copies" sold by commercial sites are not issued by any Utah office. How to tell an official record source from a paid look-alike.
