Deeds are recorded by the state, not the borough

Who holds it
State, not county or borough: the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) State Recorder's Office records all land documents in 34 recording districts, served by two offices (Anchorage, 550 West 7th Ave., Suite 108, (907) 269-8876; Fairbanks, 3700 Airport Way, (907) 452-3521). Alaska has no counties and boroughs do not record deeds.1
How to search
Search the statewide grantor/grantee and location (legal description) indexes online or on public terminals at the Anchorage or Fairbanks office; index covers 1970 to present; pre-1970 documents require the Historic Book indexes. Order copies by mail from any district, via the Online Copy Request (emailed), or by calling the Archives Unit in Anchorage (907-269-8884) for pre-1970 and plat copies.2
  • No counties: Alaska is divided into organized boroughs (some unified city-boroughs) and one unorganized borough with no borough government. County-level record functions are handled by the state (deeds, UCC, courts, vital records, business names) or by boroughs/cities (property tax).3
  • Single state recording system: DNR State Recorder's Office, 34 recording districts, two offices (Anchorage and Fairbanks). Recording districts do not match borough boundaries; use DNR Find Your District.4

Find the recording district for a property

Recording districts follow their own boundaries, so the borough a property is in does not tell you its district. The Recorder's Office publishes three tools:4

Each district is handled by one of two offices. Both are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 3:30 P.M.4

Alaska's boroughs and census areas

The Census Bureau counts 30 county-equivalents in Alaska: organized boroughs (some unified with a city) and census areas in the unorganized borough, which has no borough government.6 Property tax, where it is levied, is handled by the borough or city; deeds, courts and vital records are state functions.
